Memory game

Beren has been playing his memory game a lot lately.  You turn all the tiles so they are face down (and if you are me, line them up in a nice grid) and then turn over only two at a time, trying to match pairs.  You can play by yourself or with another person.  Beren usually prefers to play this game alone, but even so, he’s a lot of fun to watch.  Sometimes he’ll have a game set up and then wander away for a while.  Then he still remembers which pictures are hidden where, even after all that time!  It’s amazing!  I love to listen to him when he’s turning over the tiles.  He sounds like a fortune teller with some  tarot cards.  “Ooooh,” says Beren, placing grave importance on his words.  “The whale’s tail.”  Sometimes he’ll nod sagely.  “The mushroom.”  “The acorns.”  “The bears.”  Clearly he sees some hidden meaning in these little pictures.

That is one of the things I love to do with Abby too, is watch and listen to her muttering to herself while she is concentrating on something like that. It is so sweet.

I think Beren will remember these cards forever too, after focusing on them so intently as a child. I find myself recognizing illustrations in children’s books at the library and I am OLD!

I bet you are right that he will remember. I, too, and surprised by all the things I recognize as soon as I see them, yet I haven’t actually had those toys for like 25 years.

There is this one shiny pink piggy bank at work that I really want. I am sure I had a beloved toy of that color as a child. I just can’t remember what it is. I should get the piggy, and then show it to my mom to see if she knows what toy it was. Yes, I should definitely buy that piggy.
