Editing my book and call for betas

A while ago I called for questions to go on my Frequently Asked Questions page. Aloysius asked, “What was it like to write it?”  Now that I’m editing my book, I remember.  It’s like the monster of self-doubt comes and gets you constantly, trying to crush your feelings of confidence and self-worth!  You fight with it and tell it to go away, but it doesn’t listen!  You cry and tell it that it’s mean, and it reminds you that your critics are going to be mean.  Then it slaps you around until you wonder why you and your battered ego keep on writing.

But you do keep on writing.

And, every once in a while, a little bit of hope makes it past the monster, and it’s all worth it.

That’s what editing is like, too.  Mostly I worry that it’s awful and that no one will like it, or that they’ll just read it and think I have issues, and that I’ve wasted my time.  I know I could have done things better, but how?

But, a few times now, I’ve caught myself reading and I look over at my forgotten red pen, and realize that I was too busy enjoying the story to edit.  Maybe that means there is hope.

I have given it a lot of thought, and I think I’m ready to share.  If you would like to beta read, sign up in the comments and check back here (there are a few of you who will be pressed into service if you don’t sign up).  I’ll post your assignments (nothing scary, just tips for what I’m looking for from you) and try to get an email with the text out to you in the next few days.  At least with some of the sections, I think I have gone as far as I can without some feedback.  It’s been a great debate for me – wait and send the whole book or just send small chunks as I edit them?  I’ve decided to give out chapters at a time.  You’ll be able to keep up with me better and I’ll be able to use your comments as I finish editing the rest of the book.  It’s not going to be easy and I will appreciate any assistance you can give me.  So thank you in advance!

    Oh no! I’m torn.
Do I volunteer my amazing talents now or wait and see if I’d be one of the ones pressed into service due to my sheer awesomeness?
What a dilemma! It’s so hard being this good.
