It Works – But I Don’t

I was invited to an It Works party, which is where they demonstrate and try to sell you a body wrap. The wrap supposedly detoxes the body and helps you lose inches from your stomach, thighs, or wherever there’s flab. I’ve decided not to go, which was a somewhat difficult decision for a single girl with a tummy. Does this line of products work? Probably, at least temporarily. All my lady co-workers will be inches smaller the day after they use it. I want to lose inches, too, especially with bathing suit season being nearly upon us. But their site doesn’t give the best explanation of how this works. It lists ingredients, but I don’t know much about most of them. Sure, they’re all natural, but so are many things that people are allergic to or that are harmful to us. It’s pricey, especially if you want more than one product or want to target more than one area of the body, and there is always pressure to buy at this sort of party. Wouldn’t I be better off putting that money toward bikes for me and the kids to enjoy this summer?

I always end up thinking of Maggie (and even Beren) when this sort of Modern Woman Decision comes up, since I want to be the right kind of role model for them. Kind of like asking What Would Jesus Do? only What Would The Best Mom For Beren And Maggie Do? Do I want to look great? Of course. But I care about being healthy more than I care about being skinny. That’s been true of me for a while now. If I’m going to make a change, or go to an effort, or invest some money, it’s going to be with the goal of being healthier, not just thinner. Even if there are claims about detoxing (aren’t my kidneys supposed to do that already? I drink A LOT of water), I don’t think this product is going to build my muscles or improve my digestion or strengthen my bones. I don’t want Maggie to think chasing after a magic solution is the right thing to do, or Beren to think girls (and boys too!) should care so much about how they look that buying into this sort of thing for just a few inches of improvement is worth it. So I’m going to go with my gut on this one (no pun intended) and stick to eating right and exercising.

Although if we get the 100 slices of pizza, I might need this…

I wanted to add that I don’t want to sound like I have a lot of judgment for the people who do try this. Who wouldn’t want to quickly lose inches? It’s really tempting! If some immediate and apparent improvement is what motivates you into maintaining a healthy lifestyle, then I think that’s great. How often do we quit because we’re discouraged? A little success is all we need to keep going sometimes.

It’s weird but the mindset of what would I want Ember to think has crept into a lot of my decisions already and she doesn’t even understand English.

I think they start learning and copying and adopting mannerisms and things long before they can talk. I am just finding myself more aware of it now because they are old enough to ask questions about the things I do and say.
